If this is Premier Doug Ford’s idea of putting an iron ring around long-term care homes, it’s a really bad joke.
Advocates are livid over the province’s decision to quietly hand over $42 million to LTC homes to hire security guards, allegedly to screen visitors for COVID.
They say in addition to the lousy optics, the money would have been better spent on hiring more frontline staff and giving PSWs sick leave pay.
Krystle Caputo, spokesperson for Long-Term Care Minister Merrilee Fullerton, confirmed the funding has been earmarked to allow “for the hiring of third parties, such as security guards” to undertake screening at the front door of LTC homes to ensure frontline staff can focus on caring for residents.
“We remain committed to doing everything we can, along with our partners, to support homes during the global pandemic,” she said.
“What we all must demand now is that the federal government deliver more vaccines to Ontario so that we can continue to vaccinate and protect our most vulnerable,” Caputo added.
